WTO and Agriculture  —  Joint Declaration

At a meeting in Geneva on March 22 with Pascal Lamy, Director-General of the WTO, and Crawford Falconer, Chairman of the Trade Committee, GO5 Coalition members joined forces with farmers from 52 other countries around the world to present a declaration proclaiming the people’s right to food sovereignty. This declaration had been ratified in December within the framework of the WTO conference in Hong Kong.

In Geneva, on June 27 2006, in a joint event in Geneva held in the run-up to the ministerial conference opening the next day, representatives of this major coalition of farm organizations told the Trade Ministers of the 150 WTO member countries that the right of farmers to ensure the food sovereignty of their own country first must not be traded-off for any reason whatsoever. The same day, participants in this event published an open letter in the Financial Times of London to spread their message.
